Investors are buying up bankrupt retailers like Wet Seal, American Apparel, and The Limited, and turning them into e-commerce pureplays, The Wall Street Journal reports.

The hope is that, by removing the burden of their physical footprints, these companies will be able to reestablish themselves as digital-first brands with far leaner operations.
