TUSCUMBIA — The city’s plans to try to become part of the Alabama Main Street program could be a target in a year, but for now officials are focused on finding a retail recruitment consultant.
Mayor Kerry Underwood said the city’s downtown is doing well, but the overall tax base needs boosting.
“Our sales tax base is in much more dire need than the condition of our downtown,” Underwood said. “Our downtown is a vibrant functioning part of the city already.
“Main Street is something we need, but if I had to choose between hiring a retail recruitment consultant and engaging a Main Street program, the consultant is a higher priority need.”
The city has heard two proposals from Birmingham consulting companies.
The r360 bid is for $35,000 in the first year, and $25,000 in each of the next two years.
