BUCYRUS – The Bucyrus Planning Commission ruled Monday in favor of consuming alcohol and selling wares on the city’s sidewalks.
City council members sent a copy of the proposed pieces of legislation to the commission for its review. Bob Strickland and Dennis Teynor joined Bucyrus Mayor Jeff Reser for the discussion.
Strickland wanted to know if the retail sales proposal limited the amount of items that could be sold on the sidewalks. Bucyrus Law Director Rob Ratliff said it didn’t, but it does restrict merchants from using more than six feet of the sidewalk between their buildings and the street.
“Is there any vision for the policing of this?” Strickland asked.
Ratliff told him citizens can report any infractions, which will be reviewed by the city’s zoning officer. Police officers will enforce the city’s rulings.
Strickland said he thinks the city should consider inspecting the retail spaces every few months to ensure the merchants are following all codes.
