BOONE, Iowa (KCCI) —
Animal control officers in a central Iowa community helped pass a new ordinance prohibiting the adoption of animals from pet stores.
Vanessa McCutcheon, executive director of the Boone Area Humane Society, said there were serious red flags that led to the new citywide restriction.
The Boone City Council this week unanimously passed a retail ban – the third restriction of its kind in the state, following similar bans in the towns of Stuart and Fraser – and it prohibits the retail sale of dogs and cats in stores.
McCutcheon, along with the animal welfare nonprofit organization Bailing Out Benji, brought the concept to the City Council after hearing from concerned pet owners.
“The phone calls are starting to go up as far as, ‘I bought a dog’ and my first question is, ‘Where did you get it?'”…
